While there was nary a doubt as to the profession that Willie Mays excelled at, the contemporary CBS show “What’s My Line?” had contestants forever guessing the occupation of the “Mystery Guest.” Summoned to "play" that role at the height of the show’s popularity, Mays accepted and signed this official contract. Drawn up on July 8, 1954 (just three months before Mays secured his first and only World Series title), the two-sided document has pre-printed text detailing the parties and specifics of the agreement, as well as typewritten particulars including names and Mays’ “$300” stipend. On the reverse, Mays has signed on the line marked “Performer,” his blue ink signature projecting (“9”) strength and clarity. The document remains crisp and has two horizontal compacting folds (neither of which impinge upon Mays’ signature). Full photo LOA from James Spence Authentications.
